Why Health Insurance is Essential in Thailand

Thailand has world-class private hospitals — Bumrungrad International, Bangkok Hospital and Samitivej are among Asia's finest. But quality healthcare comes at a price: a single night in intensive care can exceed 50,000 THB, and a medical evacuation can reach 1,000,000 THB.

Without proper coverage, one hospitalisation can wipe out years of savings. Some visas (Non-OA, LTR) also require proof of minimum health coverage.

Average hospitalisation cost
50,000–200,000 THB
Medical evacuation
up to 1,000,000 THB
Non-OA visa requires
40,000 / 400,000 THB

How to Choose Your Health Insurance

IPD only or IPD + OPD?
OPD covers day-to-day consultations. Useful if you visit doctors often, but adds 30–50% to the premium.
Hospital network
Check that your preferred hospitals offer cashless direct billing. Bumrungrad, Bangkok Hospital, Samitivej generally do.
Pre-existing conditions
Declare everything honestly. Some insurers cover existing conditions after 1–2 years. Others permanently exclude them.
Geographic coverage
Some plans cover you outside Thailand too (Asia or worldwide) — useful if you travel frequently.
Annual limit
Aim for at least 3,000,000 THB annual limit to cover serious events.
Guaranteed renewal
Make sure the policy is renewable for life — some stop at age 65 or 70.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before choosing your insurance

Is health insurance mandatory to live in Thailand?
It is legally required for certain visas. The Non-OA visa requires a minimum coverage of 40,000 THB (outpatient) and 400,000 THB (inpatient). The LTR visa requires 50,000 USD coverage. For other visas, it is not mandatory but strongly recommended.
Can I get insured with pre-existing conditions?
Yes, but conditions vary by insurer. Some (like April International or ACS AMI) offer plans with medical declaration and partial coverage of pre-existing conditions after an observation period. Others permanently exclude them. Our comparison helps you find the best fit for your situation.
What is the difference between IPD and OPD?
IPD (Inpatient) covers hospitalisations, surgery and overnight stays. OPD (Outpatient) covers doctor visits, tests and prescriptions without overnight stay. Many expats start with IPD only to manage costs, then add OPD when budget allows.
At what age should I take out health insurance?
The earlier the better. Premiums increase significantly after 50 and insurers may refuse or exclude conditions beyond 60 or 65. Taking out insurance early also locks in your clean health state, making renewals easier.
Are Thai hospitals good?
Thailand has some of Asia's best private hospitals: Bumrungrad International (Bangkok), Bangkok Hospital, Samitivej, and Ramathibodi. These have internationally trained doctors and top-tier equipment. The public sector is less adapted to non-Thai speakers.
Can I take out insurance from abroad before arriving in Thailand?
Yes, most insurers allow remote subscription. It is actually recommended to do so before departure to avoid waiting periods and ensure you are covered from day one.
